There comes a day when the walk gets a little slower. (Believe me… I turn 60 this year. I know about slowing down.)

Not because anyone is in a hurry, but because someone we love has decided that every patch of grass deserves a thoughtful sniff, and every sunny spot on the sidewalk is worth a moment’s pause.

If you’ve shared your life with a senior dog, you know this rhythm: The frantic puppy years soften into something quieter. Their muzzle turns silver. They sleep a little longer. They don’t chase every squirrel anymore – but they still look for you first when you come through the door.

There’s something sacred about growing old alongside a dog. Senior dogs don’t ask us to fix time. They ask us to notice it. A few extra minutes to stretch before a walk. A shorter route on a warm afternoon. Fresh water waiting at home. A soft bed. A gentle hand resting on tired shoulders. Love, it turns out, often looks like paying attention to small things.

One of the unexpected gifts our older dogs offer is perspective. They aren’t worried about yesterday’s mistakes or tomorrow’s schedule. They’re wonderfully occupied with today’s breeze, today’s smells and today’s person beside them.

Our dogs have spent a lifetime showing up for us with unwavering loyalty. As they age, we have the privilege of returning that gift – with patience, kindness and a willingness to walk at the speed of love.
