How sad is that? But any number of sources – including the ASPCA, The Humane Society, and The DeKalb Animal Shelter – say the same thing: Every year, between July 4th and 6th, animal shelters nationwide report a 30% – 60% spike in lost or missing pets.

Any number of things can trigger even the calmest pup to panic and try to escape:
- Guests coming and going for July 4th gatherings
- An open door or gate
- An unsecured leash
- Startled pets jump fences
- Dogs left unattended outside in the dark, during fireworks
Remember, it takes only a few seconds for a scared, panicked dog to escape.
Fortunately, there are a few very practical steps dog owners can take to minimize the risks:
- Update ID tags on pup’s collar
- Verify that your microchip information is current
- Give your pup lots of exercise earlier in the day, before fireworks
- Keep your pup indoors
- Background noise is your friend – quiet music, a fan or white noise
- Create a safe space in a quiet room with bed, blanket, water, and noise
- Stay calm and present – that energy will help them!
